Wendell Castle, Unicorn Family
OK Foundry cast the public art piece Unicorn Family by Wendell Castle in ductile iron. Ductile iron allowed for casting the large pieces in sections and welding them together using weld filler material that can be patinated to the same color and texture as the iron. Welding, chasing, and patination for seamless appearance is highly dependent on the skill of the artisan, performed here by Jesse Burrowes in his Baltimore Maryland studio, but ductile iron improves the results of this process greatly compared to gray iron. Ductile iron only recently available since the 1950’s presents new opportunities for the artist wishing to use cast ferrous metals in sculpture.
